Located at the corner of Main Street and Rio Grande Avenue in Historic Downtown Montrose. At 21 No. Rio Grande Avenue, the Montrose County Historical Museum provides food for the soul, nourishment for the mind and a dose of nostalgia, all in the warmth of an atmosphere akin to Grandma's kitchen. Founded in 1968, the Montrose County Historical Society worked to organize a museum, largely through the efforts and generous donation by people of the community. The present site was opened in May, 1974, when the Denver and Rio Grande Depot was donated to the City of Montrose. Staffed by friendly, capable volunteers, and housed in the former Denver and Rio Grande Railroad depot building, this museum focuses on all facets of early-day pioneer life and settlement of the incomparable Uncompahgre Valley. Built in 1912, the depot is on the National Register of Historic Places and retains much of is original character. An authentic caboose has recently been added to the railroad memorabilia collection.Homesteading, farming and ranching are depicted in two furnished log cabins, the large collection of farm machinery, tools and transportation items. Other featured displays include mining equipment, doll collection, a country store, clothing and household items, musical instruments, medical equipment and a rare display of Native American artifacts. The research library contains Montrose newspapers from 1896-1940, a large photo collection, historical publications, Sanborn Insurance maps and oral histories. Brochures, maps and other tourist information are offered free of charge. Books of the local area are available for purchase. Bus tours and school groups are welcome; reservations recommended for groups over 10. Admission required; senior and AAA discounts are offered. For more information, call (970) 249-2085 |
