The Montrose area is loaded with fun in every
direction, accessible, and centrally located no matter what your interest.
In the winter you can enjoy snowmobiling, ice fishing, snow shoeing,
cross country skiing, and the Cerro Summit Winter Recreation Area,
which is a 30-minute drive from Montrose. Telluride, Crested Butte and
Powderhorn are the three closest downhill ski/snowboard resorts.
The area also hosts monthly SASS and USPSA shooting matches and
recreational shooting. Major competition held throughout the year
(970-249-4227).

Locals and tourists alike enjoy the summer
opportunities to hike, mountain bike, river raft, take part in BMX
races, and enjoy the services offered by the Recreation District,
including our nationally ranked skate park. Other activities
include horseback riding, camping, tennis, fishing, boating, water and
jet skiing, 4X4 and off-roading, and golf.
Annual Events include a hot air balloon
events hosted by Montrose Events, the County Fair and Rodeo, Great
American Summer Salute, and Best of the West Food Fest. The twenty
city parks are beautiful no matter what time of year you enjoy them.
The city maintains the paved bike/walking trails for safety throughout the

Ute Indian Museum and Ouray Memorial Park
|
The Ute Indian
Museum, located two miles south of Montrose on Highway 550,
commemorates the life and last residence of Chief Ouray, and his
wife Chipeta, famous members of the Ute Indian tribe. Dedicated as a
museum by the Colorado Historical Society in 1956, the grounds
include Chipeta's grave, Ouray Springs, a picnic area, and a marker
honoring the Dominguez Escalante Expedition of 1776. The museum is open year round where
admission is charged. Special tours, school programs, and events are
held throughout the year. For information contact the museum at

Historical
Museum
The Montrose County Historical Museum is
located at the corner of Main Street and Rio Grande Avenue in the
historic Denver and Rio Grand Depot building, erected in 1912. The
building itself is on the National Historic Register and contains
much of the original character, including the freight scales, which
are still in working order.

The museum collection includes railroad pictures and memorabilia, an extensive collection of farm machinery and tools, a pioneer cabin, mining equipment, a country store, household wares, period clothing, photographs, old newspapers from the late 1800s to 1940, and other research materials. The museum is staffed by volunteers and is open May 19 through October 11, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is closed on Holidays. Admission is charged. Historical Society Members are admitted free and memberships are offered to individuals, families, and businesses. Free brochures for historic walking tours around Montrose are available at the Museum, Chamber of Commerce, and Visitors Center. |
Museum of the Mountain West

The Museum of the Mountain West provides an exceptional experience. Visitors leave with a new understanding and appreciation of the people who settled the mountain west of the United States. The museum brings themes of the old west to life in real time settings. Themes include exploration, settlement, mining, commerce, agriculture, and transportation. The storefronts and restored buildings take you back to how it was in the Old West.
The museum contains original and reconstructed historic buildings, businesses, and homes along with unique displays recreating historic stores and offices for the public to experience how life was circa 1840-1940.
The MMW is located at the corner of E. Miami Road and Hwy 50, 2.5 miles east from the last light in Montrose towards Gunnison. The entrance to the museum is on Miami Rd. 500 feet from the junction of Hwy 50 and Miami Rd.

Ridgway State Park
|
Since its grand
opening in 1989, Ridgway State Park has become one of Southwest
Colorado's recreation hot spots. Located just 20 miles south of
Montrose, Ridgway's modern facilities and view of the bordering San
Juan Mountains make this park ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and
sightseers alike. Ridgway is one of the best equipped and most
beautiful parks in the region. In addition, it is one of the most
accessible recreation areas for the physically challenged in the
Untied States.
At the Park, anglers can catch rainbow and brown trout that the reservoir is stocked with annually. Others enjoy boating, or Jet Skiing. You can soak in the sun at the swimming beach area, which has amenities like grass areas, barbecue pits, picnic tables, a playground area, and sand volleyball court. There are 25 sites open for winter camping at Ridgway State Park where electrical hookups are available. Laundry and shower facilities are available through the summer months and drinking water is available year round. No matter what the season, Ridgway State Park has something for everyone in one of the most scenic areas of the state.
